ChatGPT Space: What It Is and How Teams Use It

ChatGPT Space is OpenAI’s new shared workspace inside ChatGPT, where teammates, ChatGPT and personal AI agents called dots work from the same pages, files and project knowledge. OpenAI announced it at DevDay on September 29, 2026, for Pro, Business and Enterprise plans on web and desktop.

Think of it as a Google Drive and Google Docs style home for team work, with an AI that can edit next to you. This guide covers what is inside a Space, who can use it, how privacy works, how to set one up and where it falls short. Everything is accurate as of September 30, 2026, and several pieces are still marked “coming soon.”

What is ChatGPT Space?

ChatGPT Space is a home for pages, uploaded files and shared work inside ChatGPT. OpenAI’s help center says it replaces Library for eligible accounts, while Projects keep working separately. Teammates and ChatGPT can edit the same page, leave comments and pull in files, so work stays in one place instead of scattered chats.

The core building block is the Page, which OpenAI describes as an editable document for project briefs, meeting notes, research summaries or team updates. Several people can edit at once, and each collaborator gets their own ChatGPT assistance. Pages can hold subpages, and Spaces group related pages and folders.

VentureBeat quotes the pitch as “a shared environment where teammates, ChatGPT and a Dot can work from the same project knowledge.” The idea is that people and agents hand work back and forth against common context. What is inside a ChatGPT Space?

A Space contains Pages, uploaded files and images, and ChatGPT-built charts, trackers and interactive tools. Spreadsheets, slides, Sites, a SQLite database and scheduled updates are also part of the announced picture, but sources disagree on what is live today. The table below separates what is confirmed from what is coming.

The conflict on spreadsheets, slides and Keep updated matters. Fortune and Every.to describe them as part of Space, while OpenAI’s own getting started guide for Space says “Slides and Sheets are coming soon” and that automatic page updates are not available at launch. Trust the help center for what you can use this week.

What are Sites, and where do SQLite and scheduled tasks fit in?

ChatGPT Sites turns work into an interactive website or lightweight app without leaving ChatGPT. At DevDay, OpenAI added a SQLite database and scheduled tasks to Sites. Space’s own documentation lists Sites as one of the things you can build and keep alongside your pages and files.

Simon Willison’s DevDay 2026 live blog captured the details: “Sites get a SQLite database,” scheduled tasks launched for Sites, and you can tell Codex to watch a shared sheet and keep a site updated. He also noted that Sites default to private, and that owners can add editors who publish updates themselves. Those settings belong to Sites, not to every page in a Space.

Who gets ChatGPT Space and on which plans?

ChatGPT Space is available on ChatGPT Pro, Business and Enterprise, on the web and desktop apps. Mobile currently lets you view, find and share pages but not edit them. OpenAI has not published separate pricing or storage limits for Space, so it arrives inside the plan you already pay for.

Plan details matter for buyers. The Meetings plugin, which saves meeting notes into a Space, is a beta for Pro and Business on macOS, with Enterprise access by account manager. The @ChatGPT integration in Slack and Microsoft Teams is limited to Business and Enterprise, according to Engadget’s report on ChatGPT Space.

Region is the other caveat. Fortune reported that the launch excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK because of data privacy laws. It is not fully clear from the sources I checked whether that restriction covers Space itself or only dots, so confirm in your own workspace before planning a rollout. Is ChatGPT Space private, and does OpenAI train on my data?

Pages are shared only with the people you choose, and OpenAI says it does not train on business and enterprise data by default. Sharing a page does not expose your private chats or ChatGPT Memory. On personal accounts, training follows each person’s own data settings.

Business and Enterprise are the plans most teams will use, and OpenAI’s Space sharing, data and controls article states: “OpenAI does not train on business and enterprise data by default.” Engadget adds that OpenAI’s Private Intelligence system is meant to give businesses more confidence that their data is protected. Reports from DevDay describe it as Zero Data Retention with automated safety review that OpenAI staff cannot see, with a Private Inference preview due this fall. Treat those details as announced, not audited.

Who can see what when you share a Page?

Anyone you invite can read the content on the page, and with edit access they can change it. Uploaded files inherit the page’s permissions, while linked external files keep the permissions of the original app. Anything copied onto a page becomes visible to everyone who can view that page.

One trap deserves attention. If Memory is on, ChatGPT may use personal context while helping you write a page, and once that text lands on the page, viewers can read it. Check what the assistant wrote before you share. In managed workspaces, admins can restrict sharing, and on Enterprise the Sites-related permissions are off by default during the admin preview, per OpenAI’s Enterprise and Edu release notes.

How do you set up a ChatGPT Space for a team?

Open Space in ChatGPT, create a Space for one project, add a first Page, connect your sources, then invite teammates. Starting narrow works better than migrating everything. The steps below follow OpenAI’s getting started guide and the September 29 team-sharing release note, adapted for a small team.

Step 1: Check that Space is enabled

You need a Pro, Business or Enterprise account with Space turned on. In managed workspaces an admin may need to enable collaboration features first, so ask before you plan a launch.

Step 2: Create a Space and a first Page

Ask ChatGPT to create a Space, or choose New page and give it a title. You can start from a blank page, a template, existing notes or a saved conversation. Name the Space after the project, not the team, so it survives reorganisations.

Step 3: Add context and connected sources

Upload files, paste notes or link content from a connected app such as Google Drive. Linked files keep their original permissions, so someone without access to the source still cannot open it through your page.

Step 4: Create a team and invite people

OpenAI’s Business notes say to add colleagues once, then share Pages or entire Spaces with the team. Team membership does not automatically share personal chats or app connections. Give most people view access and keep edit access for the two or three people who own the content.

Step 5: Bring in ChatGPT and comment

Open ChatGPT beside the page and describe the goal, or tag ChatGPT or your dot in a comment to request changes. Review the edit before it stands, since the assistant writes into a shared document.

How does ChatGPT Space compare with Google Workspace, Notion and Slack?

ChatGPT Space overlaps with all three, but it is newer and narrower. Reviewers frame it as a possible Google Workspace or Notion alternative, not a proven replacement. The clearest difference is that agents are built in. The clearest risk is that your team already keeps its work somewhere else.

The table below sticks to what sources report and frames the rest as questions to weigh. It is not a feature scorecard, because Space’s spreadsheets and slides were not yet released as of September 30, 2026.

Dan Shipper of Every.to found Space better than his previous document editor and wrote his review in it, but named switching costs as the main barrier. That matches common sense: if Google Docs, Notion or your LMS wiki already works, Space has to be clearly better to justify moving. What are the limits of ChatGPT Space?

Space is a day-one product. Mobile is view-only, slides and sheets are still coming, automatic page updates are not available at launch, and OpenAI has not disclosed storage limits or separate pricing. Regional availability is unclear. These gaps make it a pilot tool, not yet a system of record.

Four unknowns are worth writing down before you commit. First, storage: no cap has been published, so you cannot plan around one. Second, version history and audit trails were not covered in the sources I checked, which matters for regulated content. Third, agent behaviour: Every.to reported permission errors and dropped messages while testing dots, the agents that work inside Space. Fourth, lock-in: content lives inside ChatGPT, and the sources do not describe a bulk export beyond planned slide export.

None of the sources describe SCORM, xAPI or LMS integrations. Space is a workspace for drafting and coordinating, not a learning platform. Anything learners must complete, track or report on still belongs in an LMS. Our list of top AI-powered LMS platforms covers that side.

How could L&D teams use ChatGPT Space?

L&D teams could use ChatGPT Space as the planning and review layer around courses, keeping drafts, source material and decisions in one place. These are possibilities, not proven results. No case studies exist yet, so pilot each idea on one project and measure whether it saves review time.

The strongest fit is the messy middle of course production, where instructional designers, SMEs and stakeholders trade files by email. Space gives them one shared page to comment on. It does not replace authoring tools or your LMS.

Can Space work as a course project hub?

Yes, in principle. One Space per course could hold the project brief, learning objectives, audience notes, storyboards and source documents, with subpages for each module. A dot or ChatGPT could keep an open-questions list and summarise where each module stands, ready for the weekly check-in.

For distributed teams this reduces version confusion, a point that also applies to the tools in our guide to training software for remote teams. The catch is that anyone building compliance training or regulated content must confirm retention and audit needs first.

Can SMEs review course drafts in Space?

Possibly, and it may be the most practical use. Share a draft page with view or comment access, and let the SME highlight passages and comment instead of emailing a Word file. You can ask ChatGPT to collect the comments into a change list for the instructional designer to resolve.

Keep the SME’s judgement central. ChatGPT can summarise feedback, but it can also misread it, so the designer should check each change against the learning objective. Give SMEs comment access only, so a stray edit cannot overwrite the approved text.

Can Space track training needs?

It could, as a lightweight tracker. A page might hold manager requests, the skill gap behind each one, the audience, priority and status, with a Meetings plugin note attached for context. Once spreadsheets ship, a shared sheet could take over the counting and sorting.

Be careful with personal data. Performance details about named employees are sensitive, so anonymise, check your HR policy and confirm admin controls before storing them. Conclusion

The next step is small. If you have Pro, Business or Enterprise, open Space, create one Space for a live project and invite two colleagues with view access only. Keep confidential material out until you have read OpenAI’s sharing and data article and checked with your admin.

After two weeks, compare it against your current tools on three things: how easy it was to review drafts, how often people actually opened it, and what you could not do.
