Here is how to access Gemini 4 Argon: you need a paid route. As of October 16, 2026, Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get it in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, Ultra subscribers also get it in Antigravity and Google AI Studio, and developers can call it through the paid Gemini API tier. There is no general free tier.
Google’s own pages do not fully agree on who gets what, and plans and limits are still rolling out. This guide builds one access matrix from Google’s primary pages, resolves the conflict over Pro and AI Studio, and ends with a pick-your-route list by reader type. It is based on Google’s published documentation, not on our own hands-on tests.
Argon is the first Gemini 4 release, and Google says the rest of the family is still to come.
Which route gives you access to Gemini 4 Argon?
Ten routes exist as of October 16, 2026, but only a few are open to most people: a paid Gemini app plan, Google AI Ultra, the paid Gemini API tier, or an enterprise license. The rest are programs with vetting or applications. The matrix below lists the account each route needs, what it costs and the catch.
| Route | Plan or account needed | Cost (USD) | What you get | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini app | Google AI Pro or Ultra | Pro $19.99 a month; Ultra from $99.99 a month | Argon in the app, plus the Tasks toggle | Free tier does not list Argon; rollout is phased; usage limits apply |
| AI Mode in Search | Google AI Pro or Ultra | Same as the plan | Argon inside Google Search | Pro lists higher access; Ultra lists the highest |
| Google AI Studio | Paid Gemini API project, or Google AI Ultra | Per-token billing, or the Ultra price | Browser-based access to Argon | Not available on the Free tier or the Pro plan |
| Gemini API | Project with billing enabled | $2 input, $10 output per million tokens through Nov 30; $4 and $20 from Dec 1 | Model ID gemini-4-argon, 1,048,576-token context, text output | No free tier; thinking tokens are billed as output |
| Vertex AI (Gemini platform) | Google Cloud project | Check the Google Cloud console | Enterprise route on Google Cloud | Google’s pages use different names; regions and rates not confirmed here |
| Antigravity | Google AI Ultra, or an eligible enterprise plan | Ultra from $99.99 a month | Agentic coding app and command line, long runs with /goal | Ultra only for individuals; quotas refresh every five hours |
| Gemini Enterprise | Organization license for Gemini for business | Set by contract; not published on the pages reviewed | Argon for business users, plus Antigravity on eligible plans | Admin settings decide who sees it |
| Fairwind Program | Vetted cyber-defense organization | Not published | A version without cyber guardrails | Rolling applications; vetting applies |
| Scientists program | Approved scientist applicant | Free for six months | Highest Antigravity usage tier | 10,000 places; eligibility, capacity and selection apply |
| OpenRouter | OpenRouter account | Listed at $2 and $10 per million tokens | Same model through one API, ID google/gemini-4-argon | Third-party service, so its terms and uptime apply |
Plan prices come from Google’s Gemini subscriptions page. Access rules for the app, Antigravity, Fairwind and the scientists program come from Google’s Gemini 4 Argon launch post. Both can change. For what the model is, see our Gemini 4 Argon overview.
Is Gemini 4 Argon free?
No. Google’s Gemini API pricing page says Gemini 4 Argon is not available on the Free tier, and the subscriptions page does not list it for the free Gemini app. The only no-cost path Google describes is a six-month Antigravity offer for scientists, and it works by application.
Two free-looking options deserve a plain answer. The first is the free Gemini app. Argon is not on its plan list, so signing in with a free Google account will not unlock it. For the wider plan lineup, our Gemini pricing guide covers what each tier includes.
The second is the scientists program. Google says it is offering 10,000 scientists the highest usage tier in Antigravity free for six months, onboarded on a rolling basis and subject to eligibility, capacity and selection. Applications were open at launch. Treat it as a time-limited grant, not a permanent free tier.
The introductory API price is also not free. It is a discount that ends on November 30, 2026.
Does Google AI Pro include Gemini 4 Argon?
Yes for the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, no for the API. Google’s subscriptions page lists Argon under Pro, while its API pricing page says Argon is not available on the Pro plan. Both are true because a Pro subscription and a Gemini API project are separate products.
Here is which statement applies to which Pro use.
- Chatting in the Gemini app: yes. Google’s launch post says Pro and Ultra subscribers can access Argon starting October 13, 2026.
- Using AI Mode in Search: yes, for Pro and Ultra subscribers, per the same post.
- Using Antigravity: not named for Pro. The launch post names Ultra subscribers for Argon in Antigravity.
- Calling the API or using AI Studio on the Pro subscription alone: no. Pro does not carry API access.
A Pro subscriber who wants the API should set up billing on a Gemini API project. Google’s Gemini API pricing page then lists the paid-tier rates that apply. Some third-party posts claim Pro gets Argon in AI Studio. Google’s pages do not say so.
Plus is a smaller conflict. The Plus card on the subscriptions page carries an “Includes Gemini 4 Argon” line, but Google’s launch posts name only Pro and Ultra. Until Google clarifies, treat Plus as unconfirmed and check your own model picker before paying.
Confirm Before You Prepay
Google describes the rollout as phased, and one trade report found Argon missing from a Pro account hours after launch. Subscribe at the monthly price, confirm Argon appears in your model picker in both the app and AI Mode, and only then consider anything longer.
How do you use Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app and AI Mode?
Subscribe to Google AI Pro or Ultra, open the Gemini app or AI Mode in Search, and choose Argon from the model options. In AI Mode, Google’s Robby Stein said subscribers switch with the plus icon in the Ask anything bar, as reported by Search Engine Journal. If Argon is missing, rollout may not have reached your account yet.
If it does not appear, work through this order:
- Check that you are signed in to the personal Google account that holds the plan.
- Check the plan on the subscriptions page, since Free and possibly Plus do not include Argon.
- Update the app and reload Search.
- Wait and retry, because Google says the rollout is global but does not give per-account timing.
On work and school accounts, your organization’s license and admin settings decide what appears, so ask IT first.
Usage limits apply even when you have access. The subscriptions page says app limits depend on prompt complexity, features used and chat length, refresh every five hours until a weekly limit, and can be extended with AI credits. Google publishes no per-plan message count for Argon.
One privacy point matters for training teams. In Google’s Gemini Apps privacy help page, chats with Keep Activity on can be used to improve Google’s services, including training AI models, and human reviewers may read a subset. With it off, chats are not used for training unless you send feedback. Keep learner records out of personal accounts.
How do you access Gemini 4 Argon through the API?
Create a project in Google AI Studio, enable billing, and call the model ID gemini-4-argon. Google’s pricing page lists no free tier for Argon, so expect a key without billing to fail. Standard rates are $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through November 30, 2026.
Per Google’s model page, Argon accepts text, image, video, audio and PDF input, returns text only, and has a 1,048,576-token context window shared by input, thinking and output. Thinking levels are low, medium and high, with medium as the default, and thinking tokens are billed as output.
Google’s pricing page lists three paid tiers, with a price change on December 1, 2026.
- Standard: $2 input and $10 output through November 30, then $4 and $20.
- Batch and Flex: $1 and $5 through November 30, then $2 and $10.
- Priority: $3.60 and $18 through November 30, then $7.20 and $36.
One hands-on review reported an HTTP 429 error on a key with no billing attached, with the free-tier limit at zero. That matches Google’s “not available” listing. For a full cost breakdown, see our Gemini 4 Argon pricing guide.
If you already route models through OpenRouter, its Gemini 4 Argon listing shows the same $2 and $10 rate as of October 16, 2026, under the ID google/gemini-4-argon. It also lists Flex at $1 and $5. It adds a third party between you and Google, so check its terms.
Budget At The December Price
Prices double on December 1, 2026, so size any production budget at $4 input and $20 output, not the introductory rate. Send non-urgent work through Batch or Flex, which cost half the Standard rate in both periods.
What does Google AI Ultra add to Gemini 4 Argon access?
Gemini 4 Argon Ultra access comes through Google AI Ultra, from $99.99 a month. It is the only subscription Google names for Argon in Antigravity and for trying it in Google AI Studio, on top of the app and AI Mode access that Pro also has. It also lists the highest Argon access in Search.
Antigravity is Google’s agentic coding environment, available as a desktop app and a command line, and Google says it is now inside the Gemini macOS app. Argon works with its /goal command and custom skills for long autonomous runs. Quotas refresh every five hours up to a weekly limit.
Is Ultra worth it just to try Argon? Probably not. As a comparison only, $99.99 at the introductory Standard rate buys about 10 million output tokens or 50 million input tokens through the API, before the December increase. Ultra bundles other things, so the comparison is not like for like, but occasional users will usually spend less on pay-as-you-go. Daily agentic coders who live in Antigravity are the group Ultra fits.
How do businesses and security teams get Gemini 4 Argon?
Companies use Gemini for business (Gemini Enterprise), the paid Gemini API, Antigravity on eligible enterprise plans, or the Gemini platform on Google Cloud. Security teams that need the version without cyber guardrails must join the Fairwind Program, which Google says takes applications on a rolling basis.
The Google Cloud route is where naming gets confusing. Google’s launch post points developers and enterprises to the “Gemini platform,” and Google’s API docs label the Google Cloud product “Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.” One review reported general availability in the global, us and eu locations, and OpenRouter lists a Vertex US-region rate of $2.20 input and $11.00 output. Neither claim is confirmed on a Google Cloud page we reviewed, so check your console for regions and pricing.
For L&D and operations leads, two documented details shape a pilot. Argon accepts PDF, image, video and audio input, so standard operating procedures, recorded walkthroughs and slide decks can go in. It returns text only, so course graphics and voiceover need other tools. Google’s model card also lists hallucinations as a limitation, so keep a subject matter expert in the review loop. Our Gemini 4 Argon benchmarks breakdown covers Google’s reported results.
OpenAI’s equivalent route is covered in our ChatGPT Astra access guide, which helps if you are choosing between vendors.
Which Gemini 4 Argon route should you pick?
Pick the cheapest route that matches how you will work: Pro for chat, the paid API for building, Ultra for daily agentic coding, an enterprise license for company-wide use, and the programs only if you qualify. The list below maps each reader to one route and one thing to watch.
- Professional who writes, analyzes or researches: Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month. Watch for usage limits that refresh every five hours.
- Developer prototyping: the paid Gemini API. Watch for thinking tokens, which are billed as output, and the December 1 price change.
- Developer coding with agents every day: Google AI Ultra with Antigravity. Watch for the five-hour quota.
- L&D or operations team lead: Gemini for business through your admin. Watch for admin settings that hide Argon from staff.
- Cyber defender: the Fairwind Program. Watch for vetting; there is no self-serve option.
- Working scientist: apply to the scientists program. Watch for the six-month limit and selection.
- Multi-model builder already on a router: OpenRouter. Watch for third-party terms.

What is still blocked or unsupported for Gemini 4 Argon?
Explicit caching, the Live API, image generation, audio generation and the guardrail-free cyber version are unavailable to general users, and Argon returns text only. Google says other Gemini 4 models are coming, with no dates, so expect this list to change.
- No explicit caching: only implicit caching is supported, per Google’s model page.
- No Live API, image generation or audio generation: output is text.
- Output limit per request: 65,536 tokens by default. Going beyond that needs long decode in background mode, covered in our API guide.
- Coding tools: one review reported that Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and Cursor support was not announced as of October 13. Check each tool’s release notes.
What should you do next?
Open the Gemini app or AI Mode and check whether Argon is in your model picker today. If you are a developer, enable billing on one project and run a single real task at medium thinking before committing budget.
Once you have access, our guide to prompting Gemini 4 Argon covers how to steer it.
Plans and limits are still rolling out, and the price changes on December 1, 2026. Recheck Google’s subscriptions and API pricing pages before you buy, and again after December 1.
FAQ
Q1. Is Gemini 4 Argon free?
No. Google’s Gemini API pricing page says Gemini 4 Argon is not available on the Free tier, and the subscriptions page does not list it for the free Gemini app. The only no-cost route Google describes is a six-month Antigravity offer for 10,000 scientists, which works by application and depends on eligibility, capacity and selection.
Q2. Can I use Gemini 4 Argon with Google AI Pro?
Yes, in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, according to Google’s launch post. No for the API or Google AI Studio through the subscription alone, because Google’s pricing page says Argon is not available on the Pro plan. Pro subscribers who want API access need to set up billing on a Gemini API project.
Q3. Do I need Google AI Ultra to use Gemini 4 Argon?
Only for some routes. Ultra is the subscription Google names for Argon in Antigravity and for trying it in Google AI Studio. You do not need it for the Gemini app or AI Mode, where Pro also works, or for the API, which you can use on any billing-enabled project.
Q4. Why can't I see Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app?
The likely causes are your plan, since Free does not list Argon and Plus is unconfirmed, or a phased rollout that has not reached your account. Work and school accounts also follow your organization’s license and admin settings. Check your plan, then retry later, and ask IT if the account is managed.
Q5. What is the Gemini 4 Argon API model ID and how do I get access?
The model ID is gemini-4-argon. Create a project in Google AI Studio, enable billing, and call the model. Standard pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through November 30, 2026, rising to $4 and $20 on December 1. Thinking tokens are billed as output.
Q6. Can I get Gemini 4 Argon through Vertex AI or OpenRouter?
Google’s launch post points enterprises to its Gemini platform on Google Cloud, so check your console for current regions and pricing. OpenRouter lists the model as google/gemini-4-argon at $2 input and $10 output per million tokens as of October 16, 2026. OpenRouter is a third party, so its terms apply alongside Google’s.
